What are Stem Cells?
Stem cells are the body’s raw materials — cells from which all other cells with specialized functions are generated. Under the right conditions in the body or a laboratory, stem cells divide to form more cells called daughter cells. These daughter cells either become new stem cells (self-renewal) or become specialized cells (differentiation) with a more specific function, such as blood cells, brain cells, heart muscle cells, or bone cells. No other cell in the body has the natural ability to generate new cell types.
What are the types Stem Cells?
There are several types of stem cells, including:
Embryonic Stem Cells (ESCs): These stem cells come from embryos that are three to five days old. At this stage, an embryo is called a blastocyst and has about 150 cells. ESCs are pluripotent, meaning they can turn into more than 200 different cell types in the body.
Adult Stem Cells (ASCs): Also known as somatic stem cells, they are found in small numbers in most adult tissues, such as bone marrow or fat. Compared with embryonic stem cells, adult stem cells have a more limited ability to give rise to various cells of the body.
Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (iPSCs): Scientists have recently developed iPSCs — adult cells (like skin cells) that have been genetically reprogrammed to an embryonic stem cell-like state. This means they can then develop into any cell type.
Perinatal Stem Cells: These stem cells come from amniotic fluid as well as from the umbilical cord blood of newborn babies. Perinatal stem cells have the ability to change into specialized cells.

What are the benefits of stem cells?
Stem cells offer remarkable potential for treating a variety of diseases and medical conditions due to their unique abilities to regenerate tissue and cells. Here are some of the key benefits and applications of stem cell research and therapy:
Regenerative Medicine: Stem cells can be used to regenerate and repair diseased or damaged tissues in people. Patients who might benefit include those with spinal cord injuries, type 1 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, stroke, burns, cancer, and osteoarthritis.
Generating Healthy Cells to Replace Diseased Cells (Cell-based Therapies): Stem cells can be guided into becoming specific cells that can be used to regenerate and repair diseased or damaged tissues in people. This could lead to treatments for a wide range of ailments.
Reducing the Effects of Aging: Research into stem cells may offer ways to reduce the impact of aging by regenerating tissues and organs.
